When the European Parliament in Brussels (PEB) added a building to its architectural and infrastructure ensemble, the need was identified to improve the flow of people between the offices and the parliamentary chamber. The purpose of the walkway is to connect two buildings of the PEB without the officials having to leave their respective buildings, thus avoiding long distances and security problems. The PEB therefore asked us to design a footbridge located on level 3 of the Parliament.

A “Y” shaped overhead walkway is proposed, connecting the PEB buildings at 3 different points. The footbridge is supported by the existing buildings by means of these 3 connection points (which gives it great stability) and by light stainless steel pillars. These supports are organized taking into account both the garden and the subway parking located under the structure.

The walkway is a box built with stainless steel structural panels that reflects the surroundings on the outside. The interior also has the same “stainless” finish that reflects the light and the constant movements of people. The natural light that reaches the interior is zenithal and filters through the space between the interior glass and the exterior stainless steel panel.

The garden underneath is adapted to make it a pleasant space for the citizens of Brussels.
