This is a single-family dwelling in Algorta that had hitherto served as a professional office and was to be transformed into a home. Although the space already had a ‘duplex’ typology, it was barely visible due to the number of interior divisions and the fact that the staircase was closed off.

The work carried out encompasses the integral reform of the dwelling, including the refurbishment of the roof, external insulation of the façade, interior layout, interior design and lighting.

The architectural proposal simplifies the distribution by eliminating all the non-structural walls and conserving only the load-bearing walls. These load-bearing walls are reinforced and consolidated by means of a cement mortar rendering that remains apparent. This leaves an open space that favours a ‘zig-zag’ circulation and crossed views between all the spaces.

The duplex typology is used to eliminate visual barriers. By placing glass in several openings, new cross views are generated between spaces, also in the vertical direction of the dwelling.

The openness of the spaces allows natural light to penetrate much more into them and to do so with a great diversity of colours and intensities.
